Reviewing Reviews Part 4: Where and How to Ask for Reviews
September 18, 2018
Because of the internet, more people scour business reviews now than ever. When it comes to the art of good reviews, five important elements to keep in mind are:
- What
- Why
- Who
- Where/How
- When
Be sure to read our other articles and stay tuned for the next ones coming out in our series! This one will be focusing on: Where/How.
Email is one of the most popular ways to ask for a review. It’s simple and automatic. It assures that every interaction will lead to a possible review, as long as the customer provided their email address. The negative aspect of automatic email reviews is that every interaction may lead to review, including bad ones. If possible, invest in a software or system that lets employees indicate which customers should not be sent auto-review emails.
Another negative aspect is that emails are easy to ignore, unlike asking in person.
In-Person
While asking for a review in person may seem a little uncomfortable, it almost guarantees a positive review. It’s true that some customers may feel pressured to write a good review when asked in person, but many customers appreciate their feedback being taken seriously enough to be asked in person.
A huge benefit of asking a customer in person for a review is being able to pick and choose who you want to ask. This can ensure your business receives good reviews depending on how you operate.
Positive of Asking Every Customer in Person:
Employees will rarely forget to ask, ensuring many reviews.
Negative of Asking Every Customer in Person:
Employees will be obligated to ask for reviews from upset customers.
Positive of Asking Select Customers in Person:
Employees can distinguish which customers would likely leave a good review.
Negative of Asking Select Customers in Person:
Employees may forget to ask for reviews from happy customers.
While having a system for acquiring reviews is better than no system at all, it’s still a marketing tactic that needs careful consideration.
